After more than 20 years in development, the Limekiln Wind Farm was inaugurated on Friday, 23 May 2025. The celebration of many long years of work took place in the north of Scotland, near the town of Thurso, in the presence of local residents, companies and Boralex employees who have contributed to the success of this major project.
Limekiln Wind Farm is made up of 24 Vestas V136 wind turbines, with 106 MW of installed capacity, supplying c.100,000 households with electricity annually and saving 62,500 tonnes of CO2 annually.
Patrick Decostre, President & Chief Executive Officer said: ” The UK is a key geography for achieving our growth and diversification objectives. The operation of the Limekiln wind farm allows us to strengthen our strategic position in the UK, while contributing to the global energy transition. At Boralex, we like to say that we arrive as guests and stay as neighbours. Limekiln is our first wind farm in this region. With hundreds of MW under development, I’m pleased to see that we’re continuing this tradition across the UK.”
Esbjorn Wilmar, UK Country Manager added: “Limekiln is a success — and a symbol of our long-term presence in the UK, where we aim to develop 1 GW of projects by 2030.There is still a long road ahead. There will be more challenges. But today, let’s pause to recognise what we have achieved. What you have achieved. Limekiln is now a reality. And that reality is blowing strong in favour of a sustainable energy future.”
The operation and inauguration of Limekiln Wind Farm comes at a time of strong growth for Boralex in the UK. Since 2023, the Company has expanded its team from 10 to 23 renewable energy professionals and aims to recruit more than a dozen new employees by the end of the year in all departments.
Patrick Decostre was joined by landowner Pieter Hovig to formally open the wind Farm.
