Welcome to Limekiln Wind Farm

In line with advice from the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), in preparing the Climate Change Act 2019, the Scottish Government has set a target date of 2045 for reaching net-zero emissions and raised the ambition of the 2030 and 2040 targets to 70% and 90% emissions reductions respectively.  The Climate Change Act 2019 means that Scotland has the most stringent statutory targets in the world.

The CCC’s advice is that Scotland can now achieve such a target, provided that action is taken to further develop renewable energy assets.  However, these targets cannot be met without further renewable energy development, including onshore wind. Ways to ensure the landscape can accommodate this include carefully chosen sites and sensitively designed developments.

Scotland’s onshore wind capacity will more than double by 2030 under plans to help cut harmful emissions and support the energy sector’s net-zero transformation.

The Scottish Government has recently published its finalised Onshore Wind Policy Statement and confirms its ambitions for 20 Gigawatts (GW) of onshore wind power to be installed by 2030.

Boralex received confirmation of the consent granted by Scottish Ministers to construct and operate an onshore wind farm known as Limekiln Wind Farm in 2022. Decision documents can be found here. The site is located around 1.5km south of Reay, and 2.8km south/southwest of the existing Dounreay Power Station. It is an excellent site in a very windy location where wind power development makes perfect sense.

Limekiln Wind Farm and Limekiln Wind Farm Extension are now under construction. The wind farm is expected to be operational in 2025.

Community engagement

We want to ensure that the local community is kept up to date with activity that might impact on daily life, such as transportation of abnormal loads, and to that end have set up a WhatsApp group to issue information.  If you would like to be included in that group please email us at [email protected] with your details.  You can also use that email address to notify us of any concerns you might have during the construction process.  We would be delighted to hear from you and value your opinion.

Please contact us if you have any queries or would like some more information on the project
